Shetland Cottage Holidays
EASTVIEW, PAPIL, BURRA, SHETLAND ZE2 9LD
Eastview is a recently refurbished traditional crofter / fisherman’s cottage in the hamlet of Papil, on Burra Isle in Shetland.
It has a living room, kitchen, bathroom, front and back porch and four bedrooms sleeping 6 + a cot is available if you needed one. There is one bedroom with a double bed, one with two singles and two single bedrooms.
All linen and towels are provided, and more are available for trips to the beach etc. if necessary. The kitchen is well equipped with fridge, freezer, electric cooker and microwave. There is also a washing machine, and tumble dryer, or you can use the washing line if preferred. The cottage is fully centrally heated and double glazed and has a TV, DVD, CD, Radio and Telephone.
The overhaul and redecoration was done to upgrade the cottage for the old lady who last lived there. As well as making it nice and warm and comfortable, a walk in shower was provided and hand-rails fitted to the front and back steps. The house is on one level so is generally now very convenient for anyone to access and live in.
Overall the rest of the refurbishment tried to retain the traditional character of Eastview which was built about 130 years ago. We have tried to keep the original look and feel as far as we can, particularly in the living room with its v-lined walls and stripped pine floorboards.
The cottage is situated in a quiet seaside location and has a fine view across East Burra to the Clift Hills. There are many local walks to sandy beachs, rocky coastline or impressive sea cliffs. It is also situated in easy walking distance of a number of interesting historical sites including the thatched cottage currently being restored as a local heritage centre at Duncansclate. www.shetland-heritage.co.uk/easthouse
Burra Isle makes a good touring base to discover Shetland. The islands old capital, Scalloway is only 6 miles away with its ancient castle, swimming pool, shops and North Atlantic Fisheries College, which incorporates an excellent restaurant. The modern capital Lerwick is 13 miles away, and the many more areas of interest are within easy driving distance. There is a village shop at Hamnavoe 3 miles away at the other end of Burra Isle and there are local bus services which link to Scalloway and Lerwick.
Eastview is on a working croft and there may be opportunities to watch, or even help, in crofting activity such as lambing, sheep shearing or hay making depending on the season.
